Ethics
Yearly Goal: To be abel to understand human rights issues from different ethnical perspectives.
Quarter 2
In Ethics this quarter, we deepened and explored our understanding about Human Rights. We began this topic by first understanding what the UN was, and how the UN developed Human Rights, in order for people to understand more about what humanity is, and for them to understand that each human being on this planet has rights, and is as equal as the other. We also discussed on what Human Rights are, how it has changed the world, and what its effects are on society. As well as increased our understanding what it means to discriminate, why people discriminate, and how discrimination is an act that contradicts with the principals the Human Rights are based on.

Case Studies: Aceh Religious Violence
My chosen assignment for this quarter are the Case Studies we did that were about a certain Human Rights abuse in Indonesia. We were assigned to work in groups, and I was once again working together with my friend Prem. We together decided to chose the topic of religious violence in Aceh, and evaluated how that violence of burning churches, villages and properties of minorities in the region is a direct act of discrimination within the reason. My reason to chose this as my sample of work this quarter. Is because I overall enjoyed the assignment, and found it a fun interactive one. It wasn't to produce an essay, but to discuss the case within the form of a flow map, where we discussed how the case has developed from the past to the discrimination we know of today. The reason why Prem and I were so successful in making these case studies, was because of our analyzing skills, which we required to get to the complete root of the discrimination problem in Aceh. We through our analyzing skills were able to find that it was because of Aceh's different form of Islam then the rest of Indonesia, and because of its population misinterpreting the strict Islamic law of Sharia. This topic being related of Islam, and me being and Islam. Gave us an advantage, as I already know certain things of my religion, and how misinterpretation is prone to happen, due to the fact that many of the scriptures in Islam aren't always meant to as they are written. The fact that I am Islam, and Prem was able to analyze very well, gave us a good understanding of the problem, and our ability to discuss the case well. Leading to our eventual success of understanding the case of discrimination in Aceh.
The assignment of the Case Studies were based on Criteria C and D, which are about Communicating, and the ability to Think Critically. The fact that we were able to analyze the case well, and that the case was related to my religion, allowed us to understand the case. As because it was related to my religion, I was able to understand how the people in Aceh misinterpreted the strict Sharia law, and explain it to Prem. As well as through analyzing we were able to find critical information and events happening in the past, that resulted in Aceh's population to adopt a different form of Islam, then the rest of Indonesia. We were also able to communicate very well, as in the poster of our case studies, we used colors and images to show and describe the flow. Making it easier for the reader to understand and follow the flow of the Case Studies, being able to differentiate information, with the color codes provided. Though the assignment has been done well, there are as usual always things that could be improved. One of them was our job distribution, as sometimes I felt like I was doing more work then my friend Prem, as most of the images and colors were done by me on the Case studies poster. This gave me a feeling on inequality in jobs and contribution to the project, however in the end we were able to solve this problem by discussing about the problem first, and then distributing the jobs equally. Where Prem had to do a major part in the research, and analyzing it, while I had to do a major part in producing the flow map.
The key concept for this quarter in Ethics is Connections. We developed our understanding of this key concept through this quarter, by learning about discrimination and Human Rights. By learning what human rights and discrimination were, we were able to connect how the too are related, seeing that human rights are created to teach people that everyone is equal and free, decreasing discrimination among groups. Thou discrimination is also seen in a good way, as it could be used to achieve a more fair society. Human rights are there to exterminate the bad discrimination, which happens when people believe that they are more superior then others, because they belong to a certain group. We were often task to find how these two things were connected to another, through doing our assignments. By understanding how the connection of the two are essential to understand the certain problems in the world, and how they could be solved. This helped us to increase our understanding of connections around the world.
